I was reading today and—surprise!—it poked the self-loathing control freak. That inner critic? She’s got the voice of a high school mean girl who majored in passive aggression and a barista who spells your name wrong on purpose. Together, they formed a snarky little duo named “Not Enough.” Ever felt that way? Yeah, me too.
So naturally, we reach for the spiritual life raft: “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1 ESV). And while that verse is Pinterest worthy, let’s be honest—we often read it like it’s written in invisible ink. It’s beautiful, but somehow, we convince ourselves it applies to everyone except the hot mess currently wearing our shoes.
I’ve compromised. I’ve ghosted church. I’ve left Jesus on read. And instead of clinging to grace, I clung to control like it was a clearance rack at Hobby Lobby. Spoiler alert: my control didn’t work. It looked less like a well-oiled plan and more like a toddler trying to drive a forklift. Blindfolded. In a tutu.
But here’s the kicker: even in that chaos, Jesus didn’t flinch. He didn’t revoke the verse. He didn’t say, “Well, Deb, you really blew it—Romans 8:1 is now Romans Not You.” Nope. He stayed. He whispered truth. And slowly, I’m learning to believe it’s for me too.
This is where my Eden Thinking kicks in. It’s not rocket science—it’s just plain, unfiltered truth. The kind that doesn’t need a theology degree or a color-coded Bible journal to understand. I finally accepted it after a full-on wrestling match with my self-loathing, control-freak inner diva. She’s dramatic, she’s judgy, and she’s got a planner so full of my failures it needs its own zip code.
But here’s the thing: if Jesus can get through to me—the girl who tried to run her life like a checklist that only ever added more boxes—He can absolutely reach you too. No question.
It takes standing next to the One who is faithful. Not the one who has you crying in the corner because you messed up again and your inner judge is handing out life sentences like it’s her spiritual side hustle. That voice? She’s not the truth. She’s just loud.
Here’s the actual truth:
“Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us.” —2 Corinthians 1:21 NIV
So yeah, I’m standing. Not because I nailed it, but because He did. And I’m learning to walk in His truth, not my own twisted version that smells like shame and control issues.
So go ahead—look in the mirror. Yep, that one. The one that’s seen you cry over burnt dinners, botched parenting moments, and the occasional “I’m fine” lie. Now take a deep breath and tell that judgy control freak staring back at you to simmer down. She’s not in charge anymore. Jesus is.
It’s okay. Really. You’re not disqualified. You’re not broken beyond repair. You’re not the exception to grace. Jesus has you, and He’s not pacing heaven nervously wondering how to fix your mess. He’s already walking you through it—yes, even this circumstance, the one that feels like it came with a side of shame and a gallon of regret.
Tell her—your inner critic, your clipboard-carrying, checklist-obsessed, shame-slinging shadow—that you’re walking with God now. You’re walking in His truth. You’re walking in Eden, where grace grows wild, mercy flows freely, and control is replaced with trust. And no, it’s not always easy. Sometimes it feels like you’re limping more than walking. But you’re moving forward, and that counts.
You’re not walking with the voice that has you curled up in a guilt blanket because you messed up again, or the one who keeps score like it’s her spiritual hobby. You’re walking with the One who keeps you. The One who restores, renews, and refuses to let your failures define you.
Here’s the truth:
“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful.” —Hebrews 10:23 NIV
And here’s more truth, just in case your inner critic needs a double dose:
“They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.” —John 17:16 ESV
So go tackle the day. Not because you’ve got it all together, but because you’re not of this world anyway. You’re not built for its chaos, its condemnation, or its constant need for performance. You’re built for His kingdom. You’re built for Eden. You’re built to stand firm—not in your own strength, but in His.
So chin up. Checklist down. And walk like someone who’s been anointed. Because you have!

Helping you find peace in the garden again— even if your spiritual GPS keeps rerouting through Controlville.
Reflection Prompts for the Spiritually Clumsy & Chronically Controlling
- What does your inner critic sound like? If she had a name, what would it be—and what lie does she keep repeating?
- Where have you been clinging to control instead of grace? What would it look like to hand that area over to Jesus today?
- Romans 8:1 says there’s no condemnation in Christ. What part of you still feels condemned? What would it take to believe that verse applies to you?
- Who are you walking with—your inner judge or the faithful One? How can you realign your steps with Jesus this week?
